NEGAUNEE — The Federal Emergency Management Agency and Michigan State Police are working in four teams to assess freezing damage in nine counties seven in the UP and two in the northern Lower Peninsula. Burst water mains and sewers have cost more than $3.5 million; officials expect this to double. Nearly 2,000 homes still have frozen water pipes, 867 without alternate water hookups. If the water shortage affects health and safety, a disaster declaration is more likely, said Bill King, a FEMA inspector.

LANSING — Re-establishment of the airmail routes in Michigan has urged in a letter that went from the state director of aeronautics to post office authorities in Washington. Michigan is practically left out of the air-mail picture, the letter said. We are now reduced from 14 airmail cities to one. Our airway mileage is reduced from approximately 800 miles to 60 miles. The letter claimed that airmail service over the Detroit-Muskegon route is particularly necessary.
