IRON RIVER — The public is invited to observe archaeologists and volunteers excavating two prehistoric sites this month on the shores of Hagerman Lake near Iron River. The site is located approximately eight miles south of Iron River on West Brule Lake Road. The project marks the fourth consecutive summer that Ottawa National Forest archaeologists will be working with “Passport in Time” volunteers in the Lake Ottawa/Hagerman Lake area. Workers expect to find stone tools, the remains of cooking fires and other artifacts of daily life of the area’s occupants, who were highly mobile families about 10,000 years ago. Workers will be at the two sites July 12-16 and 19-23.
