GWINN — Two Gwinn High School students have earned the highest state honors for high school instrumentalists. Sophomore Nichole Louria and junior Lani Weingartner were accepted for the Michigan Youth Festival Honors Band. The invitation came to fewer than 200 students statewide and the positions are chosen from over 6,000 students eligible to attend the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association state solo and ensemble festival. Louria plays the baritone saxophone and Weingartner plays the trombone. The musicians had to achieve a score of 84 percent or better on a proficiency examination that included a solo, musical scales and sight reading performed before a state adjudicator.

MARQUETTE — Thirty-nine runs were scored in the Saturday night doubleheader at Hurley softball field, even though one of the games was a shutout. Remillard II blanked Herb’s Flyers, 10-0, behind three-hit pitching by Mel Parker. South Marquette survived two big rallies by Shoreland to win, 16-13. Remillard’s also came up with a big inning, breaking open a tight ball game with five in the fifth on singles by Bill Gorst and Prout, a double by Ward DeWitt, homer over left field fence by Don Frailing, single by Ardell Schwemin, and triple by Parker. Blanked until the third, Shoreland scored eight times yet failed to take the lead. A double by ‘Beaver’ Duquette and singles by Al Cousineau, Ron Rivord, Ron Brisson, Bill Berry and ‘Muzzy’ Dupras did the damage. Mike Black, Jim Berry and Jim L’Huillier had three hits for South Marquette, with Black collecting two triples.
