The company announced earlier this year that its system would convert to equal access service effected June 4. Four long distance companies will be available: MCI Communications, US Sprint Communications, Superior Telecom of Marquette, and AT&T, which now provides long distance service to Chatham customers. Ballots have been mailed to telephone customers in AuTrain, Sand River, Skandia, Trenary, and Chatham to return with their selected long distance company.

MARQUETTE — More than 300 collars set for deer identification in the Upper Peninsula have been removed by whitetails. The self-attaching collars were set in deer yards to aid in the study of deer habits. Deer following runways attached the colored nylon collars to their necks by unintentionally passing their heads through the loops, which then snapped into place and broke loose from their moorings. Each collar contains a disc with a serial number for identification. The collaring project was started in late February as an economical means of tagging deer. Sixty-seven collars were removed by deer from sets in southern Marquette County and 41 in Delta County. About 55 deer were collared in Baraga County. Persons observing deer wearing collars were asked to report the information to their local conservation officer. “The collaring project worked out very well,” said Thomas Prawdzik, West Ishpeming, habitat biologist for the conservation department.
