Ontonagon — A Flint man is in jail in Ontonagon County today on charges that he shot a protected moose last month in Ontonagon County. The man, 36, was arrested Wednesday at his home following a 13 day investigation by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He was jailed Thursday in lieu of a $7,500 bond. If convicted, he faces a maximum year in jail, $5,000 fine, $1,500 restitution to the state and loss of hunting privileges for three years. Conservation officer Jim Ekdahl of Baraga declined to comment on the case this morning because hasn’t been formally arraigned. The moose shot last month was not wearing a tracking collar and was too young to be a transplant, so was probably born in the U.P. Investigation by DNR conservation officer Frank Pairolero of Bergland led to a search warrant for the man’s Flint home and evident that resulted in his arrest, according to a statement by the DNR.
