LWV spreads word about voting resources in advance of elections

MARQUETTE — With the COVID-19 pandemic preventing much of the in-person voter outreach that is usually conducted before elections, the League of Women Voters of Marquette County is reminding voters of today’s primary election and continuing to urge voters to prepare for the election by using its nonpartisan vote411.org website as a resource.

“We want Marquette County voters to be informed and vote informed,” League of Women Voters of Marquette County President Darlene Allen said in a release from the organization.

The website, which the national League of Women Voters launched in 2006, serves as a “one-stop-shop” for nonpartisan election-related information and responses to relevant questions for federal and state races and ballot proposals, the release states.

“VOTE411.org, like the League, is nonpartisan and offers information on candidates in races for all political parties,” officials said in the release. “The site aims to safeguard democracy by driving voter engagement.”

The site allows voters to enter their information and learn more about the specific items and races that will be on the ballot in their area.

It provides detailed resources on ballot proposals and state, county, city and township races, officials said in the release. It also features a tool to compare candidates and their responses to questions from the League of Women Voters on various topics.

“Our VOTE411 volunteer team has been working diligently to reach out to candidates, particularly those who are in competitive races to encourage the candidates to answer a set of questions that will provide voters with some information to make their voting choices,” Allen said in the release.

VOTE411.org also assists voters in finding their polling places, hours and learning about candidate forums.

The website offers detailed resources on the absentee ballot process, as well as registering to vote.

Additional resources for how to navigate elections during the COVID-19 pandemic are also included, organizers said.

The website also contains state-specific information on early voting, eligibility requirements, identification requirements, overseas and military voters, provisions for voters with disabilities and more.

The website is available in English and Spanish. The state League of Women Voters will issue a print voter guide in September, according to the release.

The league “aims to encourage informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy,” officials said in the release.
