Couple rescued from Wetmore Pond

MARQUETTE — A couple was rescued on Wednesday from the Wetmore Pond Recreation Area in Marquette Township, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team was dispatched to the recreation area at 9:16 p.m. Wednesday for two hikers who had become disoriented while hiking. Steffanie Pepin, 31, and Andrew Mansfield, 33, both of Marquette, became lost while hiking on the trails around Wetmore Pond.

The two hikers, who lost the trail in the darkness of an approaching thunderstorm, used their cellphones to call for help.

Marquette County Central Dispatch gathered the group’s location, and search and rescue team members hiked in and assisted the couple back to its vehicle in the Wetmore Pond parking lot.

No one was injured in the incident.
