WEST ISHPEMING — The boys’ and girls’ golf teams at Westwood High School are gaining steam at the appropriate time. With the Mid-Peninsula Conference finals scheduled for Friday, Coach Irv Dieterle’s Patriots tuned up for the league competition in impressive style here Monday by copping first place finishes in a quadrangular event with Ishpeming, Munising, and Gwinn. The Patriot boys, paced by Chuck Misale’s co-winning medalist round of 45, recorded a 196. Ishpeming, with Mark Clements also firing a 45, placed second with 202, while Munising (209) and Gwinn (219) grabbed third and fourth, respectively. Matt Mattson led Munising with a 49, while Bill Kari carded a 50 to pace Gwinn. The WHS girls also shined on the rain-soaked Wawonowin links. The Patriots recorded a 229 to edge second-place finisher, Munising, which posted a 248. Gwinn (258) and Ishpeming (286) finished third and fourth, respectively. Westwoods’s Angela Misale, sister of Chuck Misale, carded a tournament best 50. Tanya Passinault of Munising scored a 58; Stephanie Candela of Gwinn recorded a 54; and Amy Vukelich of Ishpeming carded a 65. Dieterle said Monday’s steady rain made for tough golfing conditions.

MUNISING — Extensive damage to about 15 homes in the Tannery Location in East Munising resulted at 8:30 this morning when a landfill on a hillside ravine gave way and tons of sand, rock and mud tumbled down to Lake Superior. None of the families residing in the homes – all of whom had been evacuated earlier, but had returned when the danger apparently eased – suffered injury. Mayor Leo Gariepy expressed thanks that the landslide took place at an early hour when children were not outside playing. Highway M-94 (which now also is temporary M-28) was not in the path of the slide. It runs past the damaged area.
