SAULT STE. MARIE — A fatal snowmobile crash took place at about 12:41 p.m. Tuesday in Whitefish Township in Chippewa County, the Michigan State Police Sault Ste. Marie Post reported.

Troopers from the post were dispatched to investigate the crash on Trail No. 452, or Betsy River Road, near Wide Water Road. A preliminary investigation revealed the lone snowmobiler was traveling on the trail, lost control of his snowmobile, left the trail and crashed into a tree.

The driver of the snowmobile was identified as Zackary Snider, 28, of downstate Hart. Snider was pronounced dead at the scene.

Whitefish Fire and EMS and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
