County warns of phone scam

MARINETTE — The Marinette County Sheriff is warning the public of a recent phone scam involving sex offenders.

Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve reports that sex offenders are being contacted by telephone and being told they are in non-compliance and owe money, a press release from the sheriff’s office states.

Callers are then instructed to call a telephone number with a recording set up that identifies the number as the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office. This is not a sheriff’s office number and neither the office or department of corrections operates in such a manner, the release states. Messages left by law enforcement to that number have remained unreturned.

The matter is currently under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office.

The office warned the public not to send money or provide personal information to anyone over the telephone.
