Newly installed PWPL carpet to be replaced

MARQUETTE — Due to problems with the newly-installed carpet at Peter White Public Library, the carpet will be removed and reinstalled on the two impacted floors of the library by carpet manufacturer Mohawk Industries under the warranty, as the carpet failed to adhere, according to PWPL officials.

The work began Wednesday and is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving.

Library programming will take place as scheduled and officials don’t anticipate needing to reschedule groups that have reserved meeting spaces, but shelves will be temporarily relocated, library officials said.

“We anticipate moving the shelves on a daily basis, which will be fairly inconvenient for our patrons,” Jeni Kilpela, communications coordinator at PWPL, said in a press release. “Library staff will make every effort to help users find materials and meeting rooms, as we work around the carpet installers.”

Two 26-foot trucks used to bring and remove the carpet were also be parked in the library parking lot, which may cause “some traffic congestion for a short time,” library officials said.

The carpet issue was noticed shortly after the $4.2 million renovation project at the library was completed over the summer, library officials said. Carpet on the library’s lower level did not fail and will not need to be replaced.

In a press release, PWPL Director Andrea Ingmire said she’s “pleased the company will correct the problem, as numerous carpet squares are peeling up, causing a tripping hazard.”

Because the work is covered under warranty, it will come at no expense to taxpayers.

“The carpet replacement was a large financial investment and we are very fortunate to have the support of Closner Construction and Gegare Tile, who helped to hold Mohawk accountable for their products,” said Ingmire. “While inconvenient, we are happy the company is standing behind their guarantee.”
