NEGAUNEE — A Skandia man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a single-vehicle rollover crash took place on U.S. 41 near Heritage Drive in Negaunee Township.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post responded to the scene around 12:39 p.m. and determined that the accident took place due to an equipment malfunction.

A white 2004 GMC Envoy driven by a 17-year-old Skandia man was eastbound on U.S. 41. However, when he made a lane change, moving into the left lane, the vehicle’s steering wheel locked to the left and the driver was unable to straighten the steering wheel, which led to the vehicle entering the center median strip. Upon entering the westbound lanes of U.S. 41, the vehicle rolled onto its roof, skidding until it came to a stop.

The driver was removed from the vehicle by other motorists and suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash.

He was transported to UP Health System-Marquette by ambulance for treatment of minor injuries. The man is not being issued a citation in relation to the incident, police said, as the accident was determined to be due to the equipment malfunction.

Anttila’s Towing, UP Health System-Marquette, Negaunee Township Fire Department and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Michigan State Police at the scene.
