Plow truck rolls over, spills salt

SKANDIA — An Alger County Road Commission plow truck rolled over and spilled a full load of salt on the road edge at 8:25 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 41 near the border of Marquette and Alger counties in Skandia Township.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to the single-vehicle crash, which occurred just inside the Marquette County line. The sheriff’s office said the driver, Terry Tyner, 53, of Limestone, was headed north on U.S. 41 conducting snow removal when the wing blade on the plow dropped below the road surface onto the shoulder.

The blade then caught on the road edge, causing a slingshot effect to the vehicle. The driver said the vehicle spun around 180 degrees and rolled over. The plow truck then dumped the salt onto the road edge.

Tyner received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to UP Health System-Marquette for treatment. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Skandia/West Branch Township Fire/EMS extricated Tyner from his vehicle, with the driver walking out of the vehicle.

Also assisting at the scene were Michigan State Police, UP Health System-Marquette EMS and the Alger County Road Commission for cleanup of the dumped salt.
