County landfill reminds residents glass is not a recyclable material

MARQUETTE — The Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority, which operates the county landfill, reminds the public that it no longer is accepting glass as a recyclable material.

The determination was reached after lengthy evaluation of the issue, a press release from the authority states.

The authority processes collected recyclables, with available markets identified and recyclable products transported and sold. It has been determined that there are no financially feasible markets for glass, a situation that has been ongoing for many years, the release states.

The authority said the limited glass markets require more transportation than the amount yielded.

There also are challenges involved in processing glass, it said. When glass is received with other marketable recyclables, glass shards contained in the mixed material cause excessive wear to the machinery and cause a safety issue for the workers. This negatively affects the quality of the marketable recyclables by reducing their value due to glass contaminants.

The authority, the release notes, is continuing to look for ways to improve its recycling activities and is considering changing to a single-stream recycling system, which it said allows residents to place all acceptable materials in one bin. Recyclables would be picked up weekly. But a single-stream investment, it said, requires an investment in equipment to sort the recyclables. The authority is evaluating possible funding for the potential improvements.
