LWV launches Observer Corps

MARQUETTE — The League of Women Voters of Delta County, Marquette County Unit has announced the launching of its Observer Corps, according to a press release.

“The Observer Corps gives League members an opportunity to attend governmental meetings, summarize proceedings and report back to the League and community,” said David Allen of the Marquette Unit.

League members will follow the Marquette County Board of Commissioners, the Marquette City Commission, the Marquette Area Public Schools Board, the Marquette Board of Light and Power, and the boards for Marquette and Chocolay townships. The group hopes to recruit new members in Negaunee, Ishpeming, Gwinn and Northern Michigan University who may be willing to observe additional boards throughout Marquette County.

The league is a trusted source of consistent, unbiased information for communities on the proceedings of local government, members said. Observing governmental processes and reporting about them in an unbiased manner helps to foster confidence in government by improving understanding of actions that are suggested or taken by its representatives, and by making elected and appointed officials aware that their actions are being thoughtfully scrutinized by the public.

The Observer Corps works within laws that allow access to public records and to public meetings.

The Observer Corps is never a vehicle to pursue personal or partisan agendas. Observers generally do not “act” on issues in meetings or provide commentary or testimony on issues, unless also serving as a designated spokesperson for the League. Instead, observers attend meetings to gather information.
