Rollover crash causes injuries

GWINN — The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene of a single-vehicle rollover crash that took place at 11:35 p.m. Monday on Kelly Johnson Road, one mile east of M-553.

A 20-year-old female from Gwinn was driving a 2007 Dodge Caliber on the icy road when she lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway to the right and then overturned multiple times.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to UP Health System-Marquette for the evaluation of non-life threatening injuries. The driver was cited for driving too fast for conditions.

Assisting at the scene was UPHS-Marquette EMS.

Special program to honor Kivela

MARQUETTE — A special program looking at the legislative career of the late John Kivela will be broadcast this week on TV6.

“For the People: The Legislative Legacy of John Kivela” will air at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and will feature the people closest to Kivela talking about his journey from a Marquette auto mechanic to becoming the representative for the 109th District in the Michigan House of Representatives.

“We wanted to tell the people of upper Michigan that John’s vision and hard work had and will have a positive, lasting impact for many generations,” Rick Rhoades, vice president and general manager of TV6, said in a press release. “‘For the People’ will highlight his extraordinary body of work.”

The program will also air at 12:30 p.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1.

Ishpeturkey Trot set for Thursday

ISHPEMING — On Thanksgiving Day, Ishpeming will be the site for the fifth annual Ishpeturkey Trot.

The Ishpeturkey Trot Thanksgiving Day 5K and 10K Walk/Run, organized by Gauthier Insurance, benefits non-profit organizations and in 2017 it will benefit Feeding America in an effort to solve hunger in Marquette County.

“In the fifth year, the Ishpeturkey Trot has been in able to give back over $10,000 to non-profit organizations,” said Tyler Gauthier of Gauthier Insurance. “With the effort of some and the continued generosity of our community we hope for another great year, so can we serve the need of hunger in Marquette County.”

Event registration and start line will be at the Ishpeming High School gymnasium. The race starts at 9 a.m. Thursday. The 5K and 10K registration is $10 and can be done online at the website www.ishpeturkey.com prior to the event or from 7:45-8:45 a.m. the day of the event.

Everyone is welcome including walkers, runners, joggers, trotters, babies, children, strollers and dogs.

Offices to close for holiday

MARQUETTE — Several city of Marquette offices and the Marquette Board of Light and Power office will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Marquette city offices to close are located at city hall, 300 W. Baraga Ave.; Lakeview Arena, 401 E. Fair Ave.; the arts and culture center at the Peter White Public Library, 217 N. Front St.; and the Municipal Service Center, 1100 Wright St.

The city’s police, fire and public works and utilities departments will remain operational, and there will be no change in garbage pickup services for residents. For more information, call the Marquette City Manager’s Office at 906-228-0435.
