MUNISING — A tornado that touched down near Munising Thursday night tore a one-quarter-mile path through forest land three miles from Lake Superior, and left numerous buildings with minor damage. No injuries were reported after the funnel cloud touched ground at approximately 5:50 p.m. south of County Road 1158. It has yet to be determined if a funnel cloud spotted at 3 p.m. near Teal Lake in Negaunee actually touched down. Marvin Shimp, official in charge of the National Weather Service Station in Negaunee, said this morning that he was in the process of verifying those reports.

MARQUETTE — Exhausted, and with his face deepened from fatigue intensified by the extreme heat of the last three days, Cherry LaMont at 7:30 last evening completed his endurance drive of 105 hours, during which he kept his automobile in constant motion and had no sleep and no food except malted milk. When LaMont’s car drew up on front of Toupin’s garage on Washington Street, a huge crowd had gathered, numbering nearly 1,000, and Donald McCormick, acting chief of police, unlocked the handcuffs which had held Cherry “in custody” behind the wheel of his car. LaMont’s car traveled 1,628.1 miles during the endurance run. John Lammi won first prize for guessing his mileage.
