UPAWS to reopen following parvovirus outbreak

GWINN — The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter has announced that it will be reopening following its recent outbreak of canine parvovirus, a virus which is highly contagious in dogs and can be fatal. According to UPAWS, all affected puppies have tested negative for the disease and are “doing well.”

“Throughout the closure, staff maintained strict isolation and biosecurity protocols while providing continuous care and protecting the shelter population,” said UPAWS.

UPAWS will reopen in phases — starting today, the shelter will open for cats and small critters, including adoptions, meet-and-greets, and intakes. The planned full opening is set for June 23, including dog adoptions, meet-and-greets and intakes.

“The shelter population remains healthy, and UPAWS will continue monitoring animals closely,” said UPAWS. They note that staff will continue to clean and sanitize the shelter in preparation for its reopening.

“UPAWS thanks the community for its patience, generosity and support,” said UPAWS. “Donations, supplies, social media shares and encouragement helped staff focus on caring for the animals.

“UPAWS remains committed to the health and safety of the animals in its care and the community it serves.
