MARQUETTE — Two unidentified campers were found dead on Isle Royale Sunday.
The National Parks Service says that at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday park rangers at the Isle Royale National Park received two individual reports of two people found dead at a remote backcountry campground on the island.
NPS says that two rangers from the park hiked 11 miles overnight to the campground to assess the situation and arrived early Monday morning where they found the two deceased individuals.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the cause of death and identity of the campers are unknown.
Additional ground and aviation resources arrived at the scene Monday and the NPS says the incident is currently under investigation and says that further information will be released when it is available.
Isle Royale is surrounded by 450 smaller islands and those islands and waters make up the Isle Royale National Park.
The incident comes after a 37-year-old Battle Creek backpacker died on Aug. 12 of last year on the island after experiencing a sudden medical issue.
