MARQUETTE — Inspired by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Making it in Michigan plan, Northern Michigan University will host an event from 2-3:15 p.m. today in the Northern Center Grand Ballrooms highlighting the value of work-based learning in college.

The Making it in Michigan event is a collaboration between NMU, InvestUP and the Lake Superior Community Partnership that is free for students to attend.

According to its description, “Work-based learning opportunities through internships, apprenticeships or degree-relevant work are proven to achieve the shared objectives of increased talent retention, attraction and population growth.”

Scheduled presentations will include examples of student success relative to work-based learning partnerships.

Business representatives and recent graduates who live and work in the Upper Peninsula will share their perspectives and experiences.

A video shown at the event will highlight the story of Alex Carpenter, whose work with Able Medical Devices as an NMU mechanical engineering technology student led to a full-time position after he graduated.

Whitmer’s Make it in Michigan strategy aims to improve labor force participation, make Michigan more competitive in key sectors, give entrepreneurs and young companies more opportunities to expand, and keep Michigan a “state full of vibrant communities.”
