MARQUETTE — One of the largest employers in the Marquette area, RTI Surgical, announced Tuesday that it will be spinning off its metals division into its own business, creating two independent companies.

The company, which has manufactured surgical implants in Marquette since 1992, made the decision to split into separate entities, which will both still be owned by European private equity firm Montagu. The metals division of the company will now be known as Resolve Surgical Technologies, with the tissues and biologics company retaining the name RTI Surgical.

Resolve Surgical Technologies will continue to design, develop and produce metal and polymer implants that are used in spinal, orthopedic and cardiothoracic surgeries.

The company which will be known as RTI Surgical focuses on the development and production of biological and tissue implants, which have dental, reconstructive surgery and trauma applications, as well as several other medical uses.

Megan Osorio, who has been president of the metals division of RTI since 2020, was named as CEO of the new Resolve Surgical Technologies. Osorio said that the company had been looking toward the future and has been laying the groundwork for this move.

“In 2021 we hired more than 100 employees, some of those being expanded new roles based on our new strategy, some of those being temporary workers that we converted to full time,” Osorio said. “Right now, we have about 20 open positions across multiple functions.”

The company’s time in Marquette dates back nearly 30 years. Originally named Pioneer Surgical Technologies, it was acquired by RTI Surgical in 2013 and has become one of Marquette’s top 10 biggest employers.

“Since the company was founded 30 years ago, our hallmark has been innovative product development, world-class manufacturing, rigorous quality management and regulatory expertise. Our new brand carries this equity forward and communicates our exciting direction as an independent company,” Osorio said in a press release.

While there may be big changes happening, the company remains committed to the Marquette area.

“This place has a long history of great people and great talent,” Osorio said. “We anticipate greater opportunity for employment and growth in the community. We’re not going anywhere.”
