Sault Ste. Marie woman dies in pedestrian-SUV crash

SAULT STE. MARIE — Sharon Kennedy, 73, of Sault Ste. Marie was killed in a vehicle-pedestrian accident in downtown Sault Ste. Marie shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday.

Kennedy was the register of deeds and equalization director for Chippewa County.

According to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, police officers responded to the crash at 5:50 p.m. The crash, which involved a Jeep SUV, took place on Ashmun Street near Dawson Street.

When officers and medical personnel arrived at the scene, they found Kennedy was severely injured. Lifesaving techniques were administered, and Kennedy was transported by ambulance to War Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to a news release.

Next of kin has been notified, police said.

The driver of the SUV was on scene when police arrived and has not been arrested, according to officials.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, Sault Fire Department and Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident. When the investigation has completed, it will be turned over to the Chippewa County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
