No injuries reported after apartment fire

ISHPEMING — No injuries were reported after a structure fire took place at the Vine Street Apartments in Ishpeming on Thursday night.

The Ishpeming Fire Department responded around 7:35 p.m. to the working structure fire at the apartments, which are located at 715 Vine St. in Ishpeming.

When firefighters arrived on scene, “heavy smoke and fire” were coming from a third-floor apartment, according to a news release from the Ishpeming Fire Chief’s Office.

The fire extended to the attic space of the building. Several handlines were used to knock down the fire.

The fire was under control in about 30 minutes, but firefighters remained on scene for three hours performing salvage and overhaul work while looking for hot spots, officials said.

The third-floor apartment and part of the attic space “sustained heavy fire damage,” according to the release. All other apartments “sustained moderate smoke and water damage” and all tenants have been offered assistance from Pigs ‘N’ Heat fire relief fund.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, according to the release. The Michigan State Police fire investigator has been requested to investigate.

Assisting at the scene were the Negaunee City Fire Department, Ishpeming Township Fire and Rescue, Marquette County Rescue 313, UP Health System EMS, the Ishpeming Police Department, Upper Peninsula Power Co. and Semco Energy Gas Co.
