Assaulted Marquette prison staffer out of hospital

MDOC: 11 prisoners involved in Monday altercation; movement remains restricted

MARQUETTE — A Marquette Branch Prison sergeant who was assaulted and taken to the hospital Monday for potential head injuries has been released from the hospital.

“He is doing well physically, no broken bones, no concussion,” Chris Gautz, Michigan Department of Corrections spokesperson, said in a phone interview Tuesday. “He was treated and released from the hospital the same day.”

However, restrictions remained Tuesday in the maximum security portion of the prison, with nearly a dozen prisoners identified as being involved in the altercation, Gautz said.

“The movement on the level five side — the maximum security side — that is still restricted,” he said. “We are going to continue to run things slowly until we’re convinced that things have calmed down there. That could come in the next day or so but we’re going to continue to monitor things.”

The incident began around 1:10 p.m. Monday in the level-five yard at Marquette Branch Prison, where the sergeant was “intervening in a fight where four prisoners were attacking another prisoner in what is believed to have been a gang dispute,” MDOC officials said in a statement. “As the (sergeant) attempted to break up the fight he was punched in the head. Other staff on site deployed chemical agents and were able to end the incident and assist their colleague.”

A total of 11 prisoners have been identified as being involved in the altercation, according to MDOC.

“It was still the original four-on-one fight, but as additional staff attempted to assist, other prisoners on the yard resisted and attacked staff,” MDOC officials said in a statement. “No other staff were injured. We also recovered three weapons at the scene but none were used against staff.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, charges not have been filed against the prisoners who were involved, Gautz said.

“The Michigan State Police have been contacted so that they can conduct any investigation that they see fit,” he said. “So if charges result from that, they certainly will become public at that point.”

MDOC officials commended the prison employees for their handling of the situation.

“Our staff have a very difficult job, especially when dealing with maximum security prisoners,” officials said in the statement. “The staff and officers performed admirably in this situation and we are glad to hear our employee did not have any serious physical injuries after bravely intervening to assist a prisoner being attacked by other prisoners.”

The name of the injured sergeant has not been released by MDOC.
