City commission appoints 4 to various positions

MARQUETTE — The Marquette City Commission appointed four individuals to various boards and positions at its Nov. 30 meeting.

Most notably, the commission voted 7-0 to appoint Suzanne Larsen to the position of city attorney. Larsen will take over for current city attorney Ron Keefe, who announced he would be stepping down after 15 years of representing the city of Marquette.

Keefe and Larsen have been law partners at Kendricks, Bordeau, Keefe, Seavoy & Larsen, PC, a full-service law firm serving the Upper Peninsula with offices in Marquette and Hancock. Keefe’s last day as city attorney will be Dec. 31 with Larsen taking the reins on Jan. 1.

“We’re very sad to see you go,” Marquette Mayor Jenna Smith told Keefe at Monday’s commission meeting. “But we’re also very glad that you’ve worked with Suzanne over the last several years and have left us in a good position with a very great person to step up as city attorney. We appreciate all that you’ve done over the past 15 years, and you’ve made sure that we’re really set for the future.”

The commission also voted 7-0 to authorize Smith to nominate a commissioner to serve on the Marquette County Dispatch Policy Board to represent the city of Marquette. Smith announced at the meeting that she intends to nominate recently elected commissioner Jessica Hanley due to her previous work as a first responder in Houghton County as well as previous experience working with central dispatch.

The nominee is typically someone with experience in transportation, law enforcement or fleet management and response. If appointed, Hanley will serve a three-year term ending Dec. 31, 2023.

Eric Kucharczyk was also appointed to the Downtown Development Authority for an unexpired term ending Jan. 1, 2024, and Tony Tollefson was reappointed to the Marquette County Transit Authority for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2023. Both motions passed 7-0.
