Standoff is ended peacefully

HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP — A man was taken into custody on Sunday after police were dispatched to a Humboldt Township residence for a felonious assault complaint involving a firearm, according to the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post.

It was reported that the suspect “became violent during an argument with family members over money,” police said in a press release.

When the family began to leave “in an attempt to defuse the situation,” the suspect then “exited the home with a shotgun and fired the shotgun in the direction of their vehicles,” according to officials.

Troopers, who were dispatched to the scene around 9 a.m. Sunday, “learned from family that the male suspect had recently been released from jail and is suffering from a mental illness,” police said. The suspect also allegedly made “several statements about killing people and taking his own life,” the press release states.

Police made contact with the suspect, who was allegedly armed with a shotgun, as he was leaving his residence by boat on a river in the rear of his property. He was taken into custody without further incident.

He will be taken to a facility for a mental health evaluation and is facing several counts of felonious assault involving a firearm, police said.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post were assisted on the scene by the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team, officers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Ely Township First Responders, UP Health System EMS, Marquette County Central Dispatch and Negaunee Regional Dispatch.

No further information was available before press time this morning.
