City set to discuss Parks and Rec plan

MARQUETTE — The Marquette City Commission will hold a public hearing Monday on its five-year Parks and Recreation Master Plan, with the possibility of the government body voting on the matter afterward.

Having an updated plan is a requirement to seek some grant funding and will lead to policy changes and capital improvements, according to city officials. This document also allows the city to apply for recreational grants through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

To date, the Parks and Recreation Master Plan Ad-Hoc Committee has held 10 meetings to discuss the plan, while the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has reviewed the plan at six meetings. The Harbor Advisory Committee, Presque Isle Park Advisory Committee, Arts and Culture Advisory Committee and Public Art Commission have all provided input on parts of the plan, city documents state.

The city conducted two days of stakeholder meetings, one open house and has asked for public input. With the help of Dick Horton Consulting, Marquette’s Community Services Department crafted the plan after collecting data — including sending out a survey to around 500 random households, analyzing that data and compiling it. The plan can be found on the city’s website at: www.marquettemi.gov/departments/community-services/parks-and-recreation/.

The commission is also expected to vote on several other matters, including:

≤ A resolution recognizing Peter White Public Library as a non-profit organization operating in the community for the purpose of obtaining a charitable gaming license;

≤ Authorizing the city clerk to sign a resolution to add North Creek Drive, starting from 470.19 feet from the intersection of Wilson Street and ending 286.09 feet from the Horizons Drive intersection, to the local street system;

≤ Whether or not to enter into a professional services agreement with Donohue & Associates, Inc. for the preparation of a State Revolving Fund and Drinking Water Revolving Fund Project Plan for a cost not to exceed $26,780.

The city commission will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the commission chambers at Marquette City Hall, which is located at 300 W. Baraga Ave.
