Fourth of July events planned across region

MARQUETTE — Several local communities have fun-filled Fourth of July celebrations planned.

BIG BAY

Wednesday, Bay Cliff Health Camp will sponsor its traditional Independence Day Parade in downtown Big Bay. The parade begins at 3:15 p.m. at the entrance of Bay Cliff Health Camp and will proceed along the streets of downtown Big Bay. This year’s theme is “Great American Traditions.” Campers and staff members will be dressed in homemade costumes depicting American sports, monuments and all things Americana. For some of the approximately 160 campers, this will be their first opportunity to participate in a parade.

ISHPEMING

People celebrating the Fourth of July in Ishpeming this year will see more than fireworks when they look up. Two F-16s from the Duluth, Minnesota, National Guard 148th Fighter Squadron will fly over Al Quaal Recreation Area on Wednesday between 6:10 and 6:20 p.m.

The city of Marquette’s Fourth of July celebration will begin with the Marquette County Exchange Club’s International Food Fest, which opens today and runs through Wednesday.

The Marquette Noon Kiwanis Club’s Fourth of July Parade begins at 2 p.m. and travels through downtown Marquette, with the theme “You’re a Grand Old Flag. The lineup starts at 12:30 p.m. at the corner of McClellan Avenue and Washington Street, with the parade heading east on Washington to Third Street, and then heading south to Baraga Avenue.

Fireworks will follow at dusk at Mattson Lower Harbor Park. In case of inclement weather, the fireworks will be rescheduled for Thursday. The decision to cancel or delay will be made by Marquette Fire Chief Ian Davis.

Known as the “Greatest Fourth in the North,” this year’s fireworks display will be choreographed to music. People can tune in to 100.3 The Point or download its app and stream the music.

The music also will be playing at Mattson Lower Harbor Park through the stage speakers. This year’s audio will include a special tribute to Tom Baldini, the late Marquette mayor.

MICHIGAMME

The Michigamme-Spurr 4th of July celebration will start on Tuesday at Michigamme Park with concession stands, live music and fireworks over the lake at dusk.

Concession stand hours will be from 5-10 p.m., with live music provided by Black Pearl starting at 8 p.m.

The annual Fourth of July Parade will start at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the top of the hill on the corner of Mesnard and Main streets.

Food, fun and games for kids of all ages will start immediately following the parade at Michigamme Park.

The festivities will run throughout the afternoon including a bottle cap fund raiser for Michigamme-Spurr EMS, as well as a wheelbarrow race, frog jumping contest, three-legged race, a potato sack race and the sawdust pile treasure hunt for the kids.

A cribbage tournament will start at at 6 p.m. at the Michigamme Community Building Dining Room; the cost is $10 per person.

MUNISING

There will be music in the park, games, concessions, rotisserie chicken, fish and chips, and hot dogs and sloppy joes all day at Bayshore Park in Munising on the Fourth of July.

Schedule of events to be held throughout the day: 8:30 a.m. Fun Run at Bayshore Park, registration opens at 7:30 a.m., $15 entry fee. To register call 906-387-4673.; 10 a.m. Flag Raising All Veterans Memorial at Bayshore Park; 12:30 p.m. Parade will begin on Varnum and Birch streets, moving north toward Superior Street, down Superior Street, looping down Cherry Street, east on Onota Street, finishing on Elm Avenue; 2:45 p.m. watermelon eating contest at the Gazebo at Bayshore Park; 3:30 p.m. pet parade, contestants meet at the Alger County Courthouse 30 minutes before the parade begins; 4:15 p.m. free ice cream given at the People State Bank fountain; 4:30 p.m., water fight by Munising Volunteer Fire Department; 5:15 p.m. grease pole, City Pier; 8 p.m. egg-throwing contest; and dusk, fireworks.

Tickets are currently on sale for the annual Fireworks on the Bay Chamber Fundraiser. This event is held atop a Pictured Rocks Cruise boat and will board at 10:15 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Chamber of Commerce office, 129 E. Munising Ave., Munising, or by calling 906-387-2138. In case of inclement weather, tickets will be honored the day of the fireworks.

TRENARY

A good, old-fashioned, all-American Fourth of July celebration is planned in Trenary Wednesday.

The day will begin with a pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at the Mathias Township Community Building, put on by the Superior Central School football team; 11 a.m., parade down Trenary Street — the main roadway in town; celebrants will next head to the Lions Park, where a variety of family activities and kids games will take place. Food will be available from Donut Diner, Brisket Barn, Mickey’s Pasties and the Trenary Co-op, which for the first time will be selling pizza at the Fourth of July party; the community party will be over about 4:30 p.m. but Donut Diner and Trenary Co-op are expected to continue food sales into the evening; 6:30 p.m., Fitch will be playing music until the fireworks begin at dusk over the Lions Park.
