1 injured in 2-vehicle crash

MARQUETTE — One person was transported to U.P. Health System – Marquette for non-life threatening injuries after a two-vehicle personal injury crash that occurred on U.S. 41 West near the west end of Marquette County Road 496 in Ely Township Tuesday at 11:55 p.m.

David Murray, 41, of Champion was driving westbound in a 1999 Ford pickup truck when Murray’s truck collided with the back end of a 2004 GMC Yukon, which was stopped on the roadway while it was waiting to turn left into a private drive, according to a release from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

The Yukon was driven by Melinda Nelson, 32, of West Ishpeming, who had four children in her vehicle. Two of the children were aged 10, while one was 5 and one was 18 months, the release states.

Nelson and the children were uninjured, while Murray was transported to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of his injuries.

Investigators attribute seat belts and child seats to saving the lives of all passengers in the Yukon, according to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the release, the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Michigan State Police, Ishpeming Township Fire Department, Ely Township Fire Responders and UPHS – Bell EMS at the scene.
