Update: Police release more details in fatal crash

MARQUETTE – The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was continuing to investigate a two-vehicle fatal crash along U.S. 41 near Skandia this afternoon.

The crash was reported at 7:58 a.m. and occurred near the north intersection of Kreiger Road with U.S. 41. Deputies said the driver of a 2000 Ford explorer was transported to UP Health System – Marquette and later pronounced dead.

The names of those involved in the crash were being withheld pending notification of family members.

In a news release, deputies said the northbound Ford crossed the centerline and collided with a semi tractor-trailer.

The driver of the semi was treated and released at the scene.

Michigan State Police troopers from the post in Negaunee Township said traffic was being rerouted from U.S. 41 along Kreiger Road to Town Hall Road and back to the highway. Deputies said the highway remained closed.

A state police accident reconstructionist was surveying the scene of the accident. A state police commercial vehicle enforcement unit was also assisting the sheriff’s office.

Additional agencies assisting included Marquette County Rescue 131, the Chocolay Township Police Department, Forsyth Township Police, Skandia Fire Department, Skandia First Responders, UP Health System – Marquette EMS and the Marquette County Road Commission.
