By Journal Staff ISHPEMING — Motorists at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Lakeshore Drive in Ishpeming can expect changes in traffic flow on Thursday while the traffic signal is modified. Crews for the Michigan Department of Transportaion will perform traffic signal work at the intersection, requiring the signal to go dark beginning at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. During the work, traffic regulators will direct vehicles through the intersection. The signal is expected to be back in operation by noon that day. 30 years ago MARQUETTE - The Marquette School Board unanimously approved the elimination of elementary art, music and gym Tuesday. The board had voted in June to eliminate the teachers and classes, but postponed implementing the cuts in hopes the state Legislature would adopt a favorable K-12 school aid plan. The cuts were made in response to a $1.7 million shortfall, which is blamed on stagnant state aid and voters’ refusal of school finance proposals. As a result, the board laid off seven teachers and seven non-certified employees, saving the district an estimated $346,000. ...
