New at Peter White Public Library

What’s New at the Peter White Public Library?

“Pluto Gets The Call”

Juvenile non-fiction, 523.4 by Adam Rex. I still remember the mnemonic “My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.” Who else is with me? Rex has found an amusing way to remind us that Pluto does indeed have a place in our solar system, and reintroduces it to us, as well as the other “real” planets.

“Vote FOR ME!”

Juvenile non-fiction, j342.6 CL by Ben Clanton. This humorous political book conveys some of the not-so-ideal things that occur in politics. Some of the ideas might be too advanced for younger children, however adults may enjoy the read. These cute icons each have their own agenda, will they be able to come to an agreement? Or will they remain in opposition?

“It Feels Good To Be Yourself: A Book About Gender Identity”

Juvenile non-fiction, j305.3 TH by Theresa Thorn. In a refreshing retake on more traditional, binary views of gender, Thorn explores identity through the eyes of a group of diverse neighborhood children. The language in this picture book is simple enough for young children, and conveys that no matter who you are or where you come from, it is more fun to play together!

“The Undefeated”

Juvenile non-fiction, j811.6 AL, by Kwame Alexander. This beautifully illustrated book of poems gracefully navigates the complexities of race in America. Alexander optimistically showcases continuities within the legacy of the African American experience. With many historical, biographical and literary references seamlessly woven in, you and your kids will find plenty to unpack in “The Undefeated.”

“Maker Comics Series”

Can be found in juvenile non-fiction. DIY guide through comic book style. Topics vary from tip and trick to fixing a car; from baking and drawing to costumes and gardening. Whether inexperienced, failing to nail it, young or old, this book has something for everyone! For example, say your goal had been to produce a fluffy, melts-in-your-mouth chocolate cake, but lo! you failed, the Maker Comics explains the simple science behind the chemical reactions which may have caused your disappointment.
