New books on food and drink

“Medical Medium Celery Juice: The Most Powerful Medicine of Our Time Healing Millions Worldwide” by Anthony William (613.2 WI)–This book will help you understand the recent celery juice craze. It covers, in detail, all of the health benefits that celery juice can offer — from brain fog to acne. And while this book is mostly about celery juice, there are other juice recipes in the back of the book. Since William is not a physician, I would hesitate to put too much stock in celery juice as a cure for all of the ailments mentioned in this book, but it does provide some interesting points and good juice recipes.

“Juice + Nourish: 100 Refreshing Juices and Smoothies to Promote Health, Energy, and Beauty” by Rosemary Ferguson (641.62 FE)–While this book is not NEW new, it is new to us. It features a plethora of juice recipes with pictures scattered throughout. I do appreciate that most of the recipe titles state what the juice is supposed to help with, such as Liver Cleanse, Bloat Away!, Calm Yourself, and Keep It Regular! My main critique is that the smoothie recipe pages do not have pictures, but rather just small drawings, so you have to go back to the chapter heading page to see pictures of the juices.

“Easy Keto Meal Prep: 4 Weeks of Healthy Ketogenic Meal Plan with 100+ Simple Recipes For Any Day of Week” by Jenny Castenada (641.5638 CA)–This book is a four-week meal plan guideline for those following the keto diet. Jenny provides realistic and easy to follow plans and recipes. Some of the recipes that caught my eye include Five-Spice Meatballs, Wonton Noodle Soup, and Turmeric Garlic Cauliflower Rice. The author also has a popular blog, called Cook and Savor, with more keto and non-keto recipes, many of which use the Instant Pot and an air fryer.

“Gordon Ramsay’s Healthy, Lean & Fit” by Gordon Ramsay (641.563 RA)–In a culture where extreme fad diets come and go, this book is refreshing. It features recipes using many ingredients that are considered “taboo” these days, such as gluten, dairy, rice, and sugar. Recipes include Banana and Date Breakfast Shake and Peanut Butter and Chocolate Ice Cream. It also features traditional healthy recipes, such as Miso Cod, Salmon Ceviche, and Quinoa-Stuffed Mushroom with Baked Eggs. Most importantly, it strikes a really nice balance of flavors and cuisines. If you are looking for a cookbook with variety, this one is for you.

“Cheers to Michigan: A Celebration of Cocktail Culture and Craft Distillers” by Tammy Coxen and Lester Graham (641.874 CO)–Unlike the rest of these books, this new publication is all about drinks that are not traditionally considered healthy. It features several classic drink recipes with a Michigan twist and was written by two Michigan authors. The book is divided up by season and features lots of colorful pictures of both cocktails and the Upper Peninsula. If you are hosting a party soon, I would highly recommend this book.
