Genealogy — Marquette County Genealogical Society will hold a beginning Genealogy Class at 10 a.m. at the Negaunee Public Library. The class is free but advance registration is requested by calling 475-7700.

NARFE — National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Chapter 1900 will meet at 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be in Room B of the Marquette Senior Center, on the lower level of City Hall, 300 W. Baraga in Marquette. Members may enter from Spring Street, behind City Hall. Spring Street is one-way from east to west.
Patent — James McPherson of the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office will visit Northern Michigan University to discuss how intellectual property applies to students and small businesses. The program will focus on how to protect ideas through the patent process and how to protect branding through trademarks. He will discuss USPTO and local resources for pro se applicants and how to navigate the USPTO without an attorney. The presentation and question-and-answer session is scheduled from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in room 1706 of the West Science Building. It is free and open to the public.

Library music — Forsyth Township Public Library will be hosting musician Troy Graham from 6:30-7:30 p.m. This event is free for all ages. Troy will provide a musical story telling performance for the community. His performance is interactive and fun for children.

Silent film — Northern Michigan University’s French program is presenting its 11th annual classic silent film with grand piano accompaniment: “The Phantom of the Opera,” a 1925 horror film with English subtitles starring Lon Chaney in the title role, will be screened at 7 p.m. in the Ontario room of the University Center. Admission is free. Pianist Robert Buchkoe will provide the music.
Writers read — The Second Saturday Writers’ Group will host a Writers’ Read at the Erickson Center for the Arts in Curtis at 7 p.m. Members of the group will read pieces they have written and attendees are welcome to read their work too.
