HANCOCK — In addition to the recent $8.5 million in expansions and renovations, Canal View — Houghton County has additional smaller improvements coming in the next year.

The county medical care facility is planning about $500,000 in new windows for the older rooms that house residents, said Administrator Kim Salmi.

“The windows that we have right now are 50 to 70 years old, and they get a little drafty in the winter, so we’re looking at replacing those next summer,” she said.

Canal View is also replacing its beds, some of which are more than 50 years old, Salmi said.

The main kitchen is being remodeled, while Canal View also plans to replace its roof.

Other possible upgrades for next year include remodeling and updating some of the bathroom facilities in resident rooms, Salmi said.

Nearly 80% of Houghton County voters approved an operating millage renewal for the county medical care facility Tuesday.

“It’s been really nice to see the support from the community, especially in a time where I think, during COVID, the media has been pretty hard on the long-term care industry,” Salmi said. “To see that support even carries a higher significance for us, so we appreciate it.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
