West End update – Nate Heffron – city of Negaunee

Negaunee voters step up

Nate Heffron, city manager, city of Negaunee

NEGAUNEE — The future for Negaunee is moving forward. It is projected that both ballot measures for millage renewals in Negaunee were overwhelmingly approved by the voters on election night. I want to thank everyone who came out and supported these measures. Without your help, we would not be able to do what we do, our community owes you its gratitude.

Both millages are renewals with their rates remaining the same. This means that the rates of taxes will remain the same and not increase. The equipment millage is expected to generate approximately $150,000 per year over the next eight-years, with an expected total of $1,200,000. The street maintenance millage is expected to gain $200,000 per year, totaling $1,600,000 after eight-years.

We have been making real progress with the equipment millage over the past few years since it last approved. However, we still need to look to replacing older and obsolete equipment. The good news of the approved millage will help us do just that! Residents should look forward to a few new plow trucks, and equipment upgrades to our first responders in both the police and fire departments.

We have made some progress in the past with the street maintenance millage, but not nearly enough. Street improvements still remain a top priority. Since taking office as City manager in 2018, we have been able to pave 2.38 miles of city streets. During the next eight years we are projecting to be able make vast improvements to eight-miles of streets. Much more progress will be done when we begin our 3 to 4-year water/sewer project. This project will fall in line with our “dig once” policy, saving tax payer dollars. Please stay tuned for more information regarding the scope of this project anticipated early next year.

What does this all mean? This means that our residents can be rest assured that we as a community can make the necessary investments in our streets and equipment.

Improving their lives and continuing to provide vital services from our police and fire departments, as well as, snow removal.

It also sends a signal to others in Marquette County, that Negaunee is making investments is itself, that we are open for business. Whether that be new businesses stating up or expanding, or a family looking to move to Negaunee, we are ready for you.

I firmly believe that if we can show how we love our community by fixing our streets and investing in services for our residents, that others will see this and attract them to Negaunee. Again, I want to thank everyone who voted to move Negaunee forward!

EDITOR’S NOTE: Nate Heffron is city manager of the city of Negaunee.
