Strong doubles showing allows Miners to pull out tennis tie
KINGSFORD — Negaunee settled for a 4-4 tie at Kingsford on Wednesday afternoon in the Miners’ second day of high school boys tennis this season.
After sweeping a pair of meets in Delta County on Monday, Negaunee pulled out the tie with three victories in doubles and winning its No. 4 singles match.
“Several of these matches felt like (Upper Peninsula) finals matches,” Miners head coach Kyle Saari said in an email detailing the meet. “They were back-and-forth battles, and that’s the best scenario right off the bat.
“These first three matches have really shown us where we have to improve, so it’ll be great to get outside at last and play on our courts.”
Negaunee pulled out the tie with the No. 3 doubles tandem of Conner Steede and Trent Emard winning a three-set marathon over Kingsford’s Jacob Waara and Richard Waara, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
“Conner and Trent deserve a ton of credit,” Saari said. “They’ve played more tennis than anyone these past two summers, and completely turned themselves into varsity-caliber players.
“They communicate, they’re consistent, and always play as if it’s 0-0. They were great in their third set.”
He was also pleased with one of his other new varsity players getting his team’s lone win in singles.
“Axl Sarasin is going to get better every single time on the court, too,” Saari said. “We love how he fits at (No.) 4 singles, and he’s another example of someone who is real steady mentally.”
The other Miners’ doubles victories were posted by the No. 2 pair of Vince Tincknell and Marshall Knapp and No. 4 Wyatt Nelson and Brandon Alba.
Next up for the Miners is two home meets on Wednesday, facing Ishpeming at 2 p.m. and Munising at 4 p.m.
