MARQUETTE — One hundred thirty years is a long time for a local company to be in business, and a milestone to be proud of. As Range Bank celebrates 130 years in business this year, it is through their focus on community, modern banking technology and security for customers that continues to drive their success and growth.

Range Bank is the third largest bank headquartered in Upper Michigan and one of the region’s most stable and well-known financial institutions, winning The Mining Journal’s Readers’ Choice Award as “Best Bank” four years in a row; earning the 2015 Catalyst Award in the Business Category from the Community Foundation of Marquette County; and receiving the 2015 Distinguished Business Service Award from the Lake Superior Community Partnership.

“We realize that banking is so much more than a weekly trip into the teller to cash your paycheck,” stated Roxanne Daust, Range Executive Vice President. “It’s being able to transfer funds during intermission at a hockey game, snap a photo of your check to make a deposit during breakfast, paying your bills from your phone while you wait in a checkout line or applying for a loan in the comfort of your home.”

“We are proud to be the only financial institution headquartered in Marquette County,” said Ken Palmer, President and CEO. “Our headquarters is right downtown Marquette on the corner of Front and Washington Street. We make decisions here. We live here. We work here. We are your neighbors and we can help you with anything from investments and 401K plans to home and business loans to checking accounts and mobile banking,” stated Palmer.

Range Bank and their employees are passionate about helping the community. “The bank supports over 100 local charities, events and organizations,” Daust said. “And our employees give back to our communities through volunteering and monthly ‘dress down days’ where they donate money to wear jeans to work. The donations given filter back into our local organizations that are selected by our bank employees,” Daust continued. “In addition to our corporate donations, over $16,000 has been given back since the start of the program in 2011.”

Range Bank serves customers through 12 offices in Marquette, Dickinson and Houghton counties and through a new loan servicing office in Green Bay that opened in 2016. Range Bank offers products including:

• Personal and business deposit products including online and mobile banking, mobile deposit and the world’s largest ATM network

• Business Loans and Cash Management Services

• Personal Loans and Mortgages

• Trust & Wealth Management Services

Range Bank started as The First National Bank of Negaunee in a building on the south side of Iron Street in that community. The bank weathered the national financial panic of 1893 and the 1932 bank holiday when many banks closed. First National survived and was one of the first banks in the Upper Peninsula allowed to reopen.

The First National Bank of Negaunee evolved with the changing times and continued to serve the community. In 2004, it along with The First National Bank of Calumet-Lake Linden took on a new identity as Range Bank and in 2006 the two were merged into a single national banking association.

“The Range name was selected to honor and reflect the heritage of the iron and copper ranges our communities were founded upon,” said Palmer.

When it comes to homeownership, Range Bank employs local underwriters to help with the process. “Financing situations are not always black and white,” said Daust. “The capability of having the underwriter right here allows us to do loans for people in different types of situations.” Daust also noted that “Range Bank keeps the servicing of our mortgages so customers can make payments at any of our offices and talk to us about their mortgage anytime.”

Daust added: “Our people make the difference. We have longevity on our staff. You can’t find a better group of employees in the U.P. as far as experience goes.”

To celebrate 130 years of being part of the community, Range has put together a number of special promotions, including a cd special; a camping giveaway at each office; and a giveaway in which the public votes via comments on the bank’s Facebook page for which non-profits will receive a $130 donation each week.

“We also have our new School Spirit program,” Daust said. “Our School Spirit account is a customizable checking account that rewards you with cash back and your school with a donation each time you use your debit card.”

Piloted in Negaunee, the program now includes the Lake Linden and Calumet schools.
