First Amendment must prevail

To the Journal editor: On May 23, the culture wars came to Marquette in the form of a request to remove a book on LGBTQIA themes in the Young Adult collection at Peter White Public Library. The request had gone through the full process of review by the Library staff and a vote of the Board not to remove the book. The patron appealed which meant the request went to a public session of the library board. That evening, not one person from the public spoke in favor of removing the book. To the Journal editor: In the June 30 issue, The Mining Journal printed an article entitled “Crops stressed as central U.S. deals with drought.” This article mentioned the frequency and intensity of significant droughts and heavy rainfall events was increasing due to the burning of fossil fuels and other human activities that release heat-trapping greenhouse gases. To the Journal editor: In our fast moving world, a good way to go is one day at a time. Think of the many blessings from those of us to follow the way of the Lord. Have a home to live in. How about family and friends, some food to eat and decent health. Those of us blessed in this way should try to remember to help those who aren’t. Times have changed in our world. Members of the community shared some legitimate concerns (hard drug use at their store fronts) and some alarming solutions (buying guns to deal with the homeless population). As a former volunteer and former board member for the Room at the Inn, the homeless shelter on Washington Street, I have some observations. DWOS a success

To the Journal editor: After a 3-year hiatus, the fundraising event for the Upper Peninsula Hospice Foundation Dancing with our Stars returned May 24 and 25 to a record audience and also a record amount of funds raised. As the director of the foundation, it was an amazing experience to watch the dance couples perform under the direction of some amazing dance professionals.
