Hold Trump accountable

To the Journal editor: The Ojibway people who originally occupied this area had what they called grandfather teachings. These were character traits that tribal elders tried to instill in younger tribal members for the good of the entire tribe. There were seven grandfather teachings: Wisdom, humility, honesty, respect, bravery, love and truth. I have asked myself how many of these traits have been displayed by Donald Trump. The answer is none. I have added some additional qualities that are possessed by people I respect and admire. My list includes compassion, empathy and a sense of ...

Trump, Vance disappoint

To the Journal editor: Today before the world I am ashamed to call myself an American. I’ve long since reconciled with the flaws in this American enterprise because I convinced myself that the fundamental values and principles of decency and respect held by the men and women we elect will ultimately override and diminish those flaws. (Recently) though, as I watched and heard the president and vice president of these United States berate and demean the president of another country, I lost all of what little faith I had left in this American experiment to work. A colleague in ...

Bergman challenged

To the Journal editor: U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, has forgotten who he works for. I’m not the only one who has noticed this. The entire country now knows our congressman won’t face us in a town hall. It’s been nearly a decade since he last held one. That’s a long time. He says Trump was elected and washes his hands of us. His job isn’t to have the president’s back. His job is to have ...

Program needed

To the Journal editor: Imagine that this is your life…You’re an electrician, your wife is a nurse working at the local hospital. You have three kids that you support, a home, a business. You’ve heard that there are Russian troops amassing at a border nearby and you are concerned. They’ve attacked your nation before. Before you’ve prepared, they attack. You throw everything that you can into your car and head north, away from the battle, leaving behind everything, destroyed, in flames, ashes. You thank the Lord that you’re alive. You continue to drive, find a small place ...

Dangers lurk on Teal Lake

To the Journal editor: In Negaunee Township, Teal Lake exemplifies nature’s true beauty for residents and travelers alike. From sunrises to sunsets to 4th of July celebrations, this amazing two-mile stretch of highway on U.S. 41/M-28 in Upper Michigan captures generations of memories for its 4,000+ residents. Included in these memories are numerous fishing tents positioned across the lake each winter. Of course, that image has grown recently to include snowmobiles and large pickup trucks. Even small mobile trailers are parked on the lake throughout the winter. Everything seems ...

Questions, questions

To the Journal editor: “We are finding billions of dollars of waste.”- Elon Musk. No, they are not. We are finding billions of dollars of fraud”- Elon Musk. No, they are not. “ We are saving America billions of dollars” -Again, Elon Musk. No, they are not. Do you want to know how I know they aren’t finding billions of dollars of waste? Do you want to know how I know they aren’t finding billions of dollars of fraud” Do you want to know how I know they aren’t saving America billions of dollars? I know because they aren’t even looking for ...
