30 years ago MARQUETTE — Lakeview Arena may become tobacco-free in January if the arena’s advisory board has its way. The Marquette City Commission will discuss a proposed smoking ban Dec. 12. The proposal was prompted by complaints that the ventilation system in the arena’s East Conference Room smoking area is inadequate for clearing the air of the smoke produced during hockey game period breaks. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — The average rural response time to a medical emergency is 11 minutes nationwide, compared to an average of four minutes in a metropolitan area. In some cases in the Upper Peninsula, it can take hours for help to arrive at the scene of an accident. But that may change with help from a grant from the Michigan Trauma Coalition, which is helping Marquette General Hospital develop the Upper Peninsula Trauma Network.
