Never forget soldiers who fought

To the Journal editor:

Wednesday, June 6, The Mining Journal editorial page placed a picture someone had taken from a landing craft during D-Day 1944 showing soldiers leaving and heading for the beach. As an Army veteran myself I can only imagine the thoughts racing through the minds of many or all of those pictured and may not even have lived to the end of that day. I had a heartfelt gratitude to those men for the freedom we all enjoy today. Their sacrifices allowed Americans like myself to attain “Social Security age.”

Then I moved to a letter written by Phyllis Dewitt. As I read it I though, “There’s another one.” Complain complain complain. I was just about to move on until Phyllis mentioned something that made me very sad. In her letter she said, “I am having a hard time thinking of those who vote Republican as Americans and/or Christians. That does not compute!” I guess in her mind I am another one of those “deplorables” as some politician had called me sometime ago. Then I looked back to that picture of that fateful day in 1944 and thought about how many of those soldiers were Republicans, Democrats, Christian. I do know for sure we all were united as Americans. They all fought and died having two things in common. All were American and all bled red. As a Christian I put my faith in the Trinity. Phyllis, my suggestion to you is to pray for our leaders that they would make wise decisions. Prayer makes a difference. We have two main political parties in this country with the privilege to vote the way our hearts lead us. That does not make those of a party you don’t agree with enemies. We all are Americans, Republican and Democrat, that’s what those soldiers died for, the freedom to choose. “Never forget.”

Hematites rock!

To the Journal editor:

Congratulations to head coach Ryan Reichel and assistant coach Brad Austin and the Ishpeming High School Hematites varsity girls basketball team on a great season. Great job to five seniors: Mariah Austin, Katie Loman, Madigan Johns, Mariah Bertucci and Chloe Sjoholm. Big thank you to Coach Reichel for moving my cousin Kayla Koski up from junior varsity for playoffs. IHS Hematites varsity girls basketball team won the 2018 district title on March 21. They finished the season with 20 wins and 4 losses. Great job to the players and to the coaches, too.

Remember the children

To the Journal editor:

The most important thing about you, or me, or anyone is that we belong to God.

As the beneficiaries of living in a country founded on the values of mercy and compassion, how dare we now “Suffer The Little Children.”
