SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE – If the weather cooperates, the F-16’s of the Air Force Thunderbirds were to prove the capabilities of this maneuverable fighter plane through a series of aerobatic loops, rolls and other formations, before an audience at Sawyer’s annual open house this afternoon. The Thunderbirds demonstration was among several events scheduled to take place during the day. The Army’s Golden Knights parachuting team and other military demonstrations were on schedule, with the Air Force aerial demonstration team expected to perform in a show beginning at 3:30 p.m. The F-16, which is capable of going faster than twice the speed of sound, has a primary purpose of a fighter aircraft, said Capt. Joe Bulmer, one of the team’s six demonstration pilots. The eight aircraft to be displayed during the open house at Sawyer are combat planes with the exception of their paint job and smoke attachments, he said. In addition to skill, a great amount of trust and confidence is necessary among the pilots whose aircraft fly as close as six feet from one another, said pilot K.C. Schow.
