906 Adventure youths compete in Wisconsin

WAUKESHA, Wisconsin – Thirteen youth riders from the 906 Adventure composite team participated in the opening race of the Wisconsin High School Cycling League on Aug. 28.

The league has 29 teams of sixth- to 12th-graders representing high schools or cooperative teams. The 906 team, coached by Todd Poquette, includes 11 racers from the Marquette schools district and two from Negaunee.

Four 906 racers made the podium at Minooka Park in Waukesha.

Siblings Carson and Erin VanderSchaaf each won a Junior High race, Carson taking the sixth-grade boys six-mile course in 27 minutes, 37.3 seconds and Erin winning the eighth-grade girls in 27:02.

In addition, Colin VanderSchaaf, Carson’s twin brother, was third in the sixth-grade boys division in 28:48.7, and Jayce Johnson was fifth in the freshman girls race in 56:10.5 for the 11-mile run.

Here are other 906 finishers:

Aaron Grzelak – 13th place, freshman boys (11 miles), 50:38.8

Alex Stanley – 14th, JV boys (16 miles), 1:07:54

Caden Holm – 19th, freshman boys (11 miles), 52:02.6

Louis Hindman – 22nd, freshman boys (11 miles), 52:57.1

Tucker Close – 23rd, 7th-grade boys (6 miles), 33:31.1

Caleb Clark – 27th, freshman boys (11 miles), 55:48.2

Charlie Ruuska – 29th, JV boys (16 miles), 1:14:22.2

Truman Durand – 30th, freshman boys (11 miles), 57:13.9

Wyatt Clement – 36th, freshman boys (11 miles), 1:02:11.1

The 906 team placed 13th out of 29 teams based on points earned by their top four high school finishers. Varsity and JV races award higher point totals than freshman and sophomore races, so the young 906 team is at a scoring disadvantage until their young racers age into the older categories.

The next league race will be at Iola, Wisconsin, on Sept. 18.
