Junior leads Ishpeming boys to regional track title

IRON RIVER — Ishpeming held off Mitchell LeGrave and Norway for the boys title while Hancock edged West Iron County for girls honors Thursday in the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 2 regional track and field meet at Nelson Field.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the U.P. Finals to be held on Saturday, June 1, at Kingsford.

Ishpeming boys win

Ishpeming’s boys tallied 65 points in beating Norway, which had 52.5. Following them was Ironwood with 33, L’Anse 21, Hancock 9.5 and West Iron County 6.

LeGrave led the Knights with four firsts in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, long jump and 400 relay.

Jonah Broberg paced the Hematites with victories in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 runs. Teammate Logan Kruhlik had firsts in the shot put and discus.

Other Ishpeming winners were Gavin Sundberg in the 400 and Coulton Prillwitz in the 300 hurdles. The school’s 3,200 relay also won that consisted of Broberg, Spencer Giroux, Jordan Longtine and David Liimatta.

Finishing as runners-up were Sundberg in the 200, Liimatta in the 800 and Prillwitz in the long jump. And Ishpeming finished second in the 400 relay.

Coming in third was the Hematites’ Braeden Arsenault in the 100, Giroux in the 1,600, Owen Morton in the shot put and Sundberg in the long jump.

And earning the all-important fourth-place position were Giroux in the 800 and teammate Silas Broberg in the 3,200.

L’Anse had 10 qualifiers, including three of its relays — the 3,200 was second, 400 third and 800 fourth.

Individually for the Purple Hornets, Malecki Goyen was a two-time finals qualifier, placing second in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Teammate Nathan Hochstein was second in the high jump, Robert Genschow second in the shot put, Jaden DeMink third in the discus, Cooper LaPlante third in the 400 and Eli Ostermeyer fourth in the shot put.

Hematite girls strong 3rd

Hancock’s girls posted 49.5 points to edge out the host Wykons, who had 45, and Ishpeming, right behind them with 44. L’Anse totaled 24 points, Ironwood 12 and Norway 8.5.

The Bulldogs’ Kalli Chynoweth figured in three firsts, winning the 800 and participating in the winning 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Freshman Kyra Sipe of L’Anse won the 100 and 200. West Iron’s Jordan Shamion swept the 100 and 300 hurdles.

Also for L’Anse, Alayna Waara won the high jump and placed fourth in the long jump, while Hunter Pelon was third in the 100 hurdles.

The Hornets’ 400 and 800 relays each took second.

Ishpeming had four victories in the girls meet, including Rebekah Loman taking the discus and Kayla Koski the long jump.

Also winning were the Hematites’ 400 relay team of Koski, Hailey Smith, Madisyn Mead and Emma Poirier; and its 800 relay consisting of Smith, Mead, Poirier and Koski.

Ishpeming’s 1,600 and 3,200 relays each placed third.

Mead was also second in the 100 hurdles, Loman third in the shot put, Koski third in the 200 and Poirier fourth in the 100.

Also for the Hematites, Taylor Longtine was second in the 3,200, Malinda Willey fourth in the 800, Abby Racine fourth in the 1,600 and Maria Montcalm fourth in the 100 hurdles.
