MSHS, Mustangs win in Munising

MUNISING — The Marquette boys and Munising girls carried the day at the Munising Invitational high school golf meet held at Pictured Rocks Golf Club in Munising on Friday.

Led by medalist Tyler Bergwall, the Redmen won by a comfortable 45-stroke margin over runner-up Negaunee.

Marquette had 320, Negaunee 365, Munising 383, Manistique 417 and Westwood 427 as Gladstone didn’t field a full team.

The Mustang girls had a much closer 15-stroke margin in the girls meet.

Munising’s Taylor Downs shot 101 and was runner-up for medalist honors to Gladstone’s Sophia Lippens, who had 98.

Munising totaled 458, while Gladstone was runner-up with 473. Manistique was third with 500 and Negaunee 542 as Westwood and Marquette were one golfer short of full teams.

Gladstone’s Megan Lukezich was third in the girls meet with 104, followed by Munising’s Kennedy Tate with 107 and teammate Sydney Curtis with 108.

Marquette was paced by Sierra Bentti with 110, Westwood by Haley Mattila with 111, Negaunee by Rylee Gustafson with 114 and Manistique by Jordyn Reque with 121.

In the boys meet, Marquette actually had the four best individual scorers. After Bergwall was Kyle Nemacheck with 80 and Karsten Kamps and Jordan Jurmu each with 82.

The best of the rest was Munising’s Anthony Mattson with 84 and Negaunee’s Jordan Mason and Gladstone’s Cam Ballard each with 85.

Westwood was paced by Colin Bjorne with 90 and Manistique by Curtis Byrns and Alex Oas both with 91.
