Hematites swat away Purple Hornets
ISHPEMING – A 21-10 first-quarter surge carried the Ishpeming High School girls basketball team to a 78-37 non-conference win over visiting L’Anse Monday night.
“We came out with a press right away and forced a lot of turnovers, which led to some transition baskets,” IHS head coach Brad Austin said.
The Hematites then outscored the Purple Hornets 19-7 in the second quarter for a 40-17 lead at intermission to improve to 14-3 on the season.
“We kept the pressure on in the second,” Austin said. “L’Anse played a zone (defense) and the girls made some shots.
“We also got to the free-throw line (making 18 of 26 for 69.2 percent).”
Kaylie Engler poured in 22 points to lead IHS offensively. Jessica Spencer added 14 points while Marissa Maino hauled down 10 rebounds.
Bailey Froberg led L’Anse with 12 points. Emily Magaraggia contributed 10 rebounds.
Lake Linden-Hubbell 63, Republic-Michigamme 15
At Republic, the host Hawks were outscored 41-6 in the first half, including 21-1 in the second quarter of a Copper Country Conference game.
“We stopped shooting in the second quarter. We took just five shots,” R-M head coach April Radcliffe said. “We’d go up for a shot, then lose the ball.
“We’d also put a hand in their faces, but (the Lakes) still made their shots.”
Sarah Audette paced the Lakes (8-8, 7-2) with 18 points. Teammate Peyton Gast added 12 and Carli Ongie chipped in 11.
Jazzmond Pantoja tossed in eight points for the Hawks (2-14, 0-8).
Iron Mountain 48, Manistique 22
At Manistique, Iron Mountain extended its Mid-Peninsula Conference winning streak to five games as Anni Cevigney, Cassie Feira and Alyssa Khor each scored eight points.
“We’re continuing to play hard and get better,” Mountaineers coach Ginger Moore said. “I’m proud of the girls for really being focused on staying together and getting better.”
Iron Mountain (10-7 overall, 9-2 M-PC) rolled to a 29-12 halftime lead. Manistique managed a 5-2 edge in the third quarter but the Mountaineers came back with a 17-6 fourth quarter.
Junior guard Allie Nagy paced the Emeralds (1-17, 0-10) with eight points.
Manistique won the JV game, 42-26.
Bark River-Harris 67, Superior Central 23
At Eben, the Upper Peninsula’s third-ranked Broncos won for the seventh straight time, leading 34-15 at halftime and 57-20 after the third quarter of a Skyline Central Conference game.
Allissa Willa led BR-H (15-2 overall, 10-1 league) with 17 points in her first varsity start. Caitlyn Frazer added 14 and Hannah Starnes had 10.
Emma Rondeau paced the Cougars (2-16 overall, 2-11 league).
“Emma played pretty well,” SC coach Greg Trowbridge said. “She was a little nervous to start and had foul trouble in the second quarter, but played a real good first quarter. We saw some improvement in her.”
BR-H committed just five turnovers and the Cougars had 22 miscues and hit 10 of 33 field goals.
Trowbridge came away impressed with the Broncos.
“They’re a very good team,” he said. “They have size and shooters. Their fast break and press were working real well tonight.
“We didn’t help ourselves. We were like deer in headlights. When we settled down, we did a pretty good job breaking their press. Only, we turned the ball over when we got past midcourt. It’s still a learning process for us.”
BR-H, which also won the JV game 53-13, hosts Carney-Nadeau Thursday. SC visits U.P. No. 1 Munising Thursday.
