Sentinels softball finishes regular season with sweep

MARQUETTE — Marquette swept a high school softball doubleheader at home against Menominee to finish its regular season on Wednesday. The Sentinels recorded 6-5 and 18-3 victories in preparation for today’s MHSAA Division 1 district tournament to be held at Traverse City West. After the two hometown schools, Central and West, square off at 10 a.m., Marquette takes on Alpena at noon. The winners play for the district championship at 2 p.m., also at TC West. HOUGHTON — When Bark River-Harris has enough golfers for a team, they’ve become pretty tough to beat in the Upper Peninsula. The Broncos won a U.P. Finals title in girls golf two years ago but didn’t have enough golfers for a team score at last year’s championship tournament. This year, they did — and they made it two Division 2 championship trophies in three years on Wednesday at Portage Lake Golf Club just outside Houghton. ISHPEMING — Libbie Doney knocked a home run out of the park to lead Dave’s Collision-Jack’s to a 27-2 victory over Tino’s in a Class A game in the Iron Range Women’s Softball League on Wednesday, the second week of the season. Teammate Sinead Korvela went 5 for 5 and Macey Nault 4 for 5, while Tino’s Taryn Myers hit a triple.
