ISHPEMING — Gretel Johnson pumped in 20 points to lead Negaunee to a 46-36 high school girls basketball victory at Westwood on Friday night.

She was the only player to score in double figures for the Miners, who improved to a perfect 11-0, own the unanimous No. 1 ranking in the Upper Peninsula in Divisions 1-3, and are ranked sixth in this week’s Associated Press statewide Division 2 rankings.

Keira Waterman was Negaunee’s second-highest scorer with nine points, while Lyn Magnuson paced the Patriots (2-7) with 12 points as teammate Abby Hallum had eight.

The Miners established a 13-8 lead after one quarter before extending it to 23-13 by halftime. Westwood played NHS to a 23-23 standoff in the second half.

The Patriots play at Ishpeming on Thursday night, while Negaunee goes to Manistique on Friday.

AA Gabriel Richard 60, Marquette 30

On Friday at Ann Arbor, the Sentinels traveled nearly 450 miles to take on an MHSAA Division 2 powerhouse that features the Rodriguez sisters who have both committed to play at Western Michigan.

They both made a difference in this game, as Ava Rodriguez pumped in 36 points, including five 3-pointers, while sister Vanessa Rodriguez added 13 points.

Father Gabriel Richard (9-2) is ranked just outside the top 10 in this week’s AP state D-2 poll, tied for 11th.

Lexi Curran paced Marquette with 11 points after hitting a pair of early triples, while freshman teammate Avery Osborne added eight points.

After going just 1 of 2 at the free-throw line in the first half, MSHS made 10 of 13 there after halftime.

Howell 66, Marquette 28

On Saturday at Howell, the Sentinels faced another powerhouse with Howell (11-1) ranked No. 8 in AP Division 1.

The Highlanders have their own prized Division I recruit, 6-foot-6 Michigan State-bound Lilly Williams.

Osborne led Marquette (2-8) with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting and what was termed steady defensive play. Teammate Addi Kramer scored five points while pulling down a team-high six rebounds, while Curran pumped in six points on a pair of 3s.

Led by Williams, Howell held a huge 39-14 rebounding advantage.

Marquette gets back on the court, but staying in the Upper Peninsula, to play at Menominee on Friday night.
