Miners take 7-1 girls tennis decision at Marquette

MARQUETTE — Two matches were decided in a third set and another went to a second-set tiebreaker as Negaunee prevailed 7-1 over Marquette in a high school girls tennis meet held at the Sentinels courts on Monday afternoon.

“Today’s meet was very similar to the meet a few weeks back up in Negaunee,” Marquette head coach Karl Thomsen said. “We had our chances in a few of the flights, but just couldn’t seal the deal.

“We have a grind this week, with a trip to Westwood (today), but that should prepare us well for next week’s (Great Northern Conference) tournament.”

Negaunee won both three-setters. At No. 3 doubles, the Miners’ Tori Poutanen and Rebecca Lammi held on for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over the Sentinels’ Charyle Swajanen and Eva Dewitt.

And at No. 4 doubles, Negaunee’s Maia Brunette and Paige O’Donnell won an identical 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 match over Marquette’s Brynn Helman and Rachel Doan.

“Props to Rachel Doan,” Thomsen said. “(She) was a last-minute fill in at No. 4 doubles and did an admirable job. You would have never guessed it was her first varsity match.”

The Sentinels got their win at No. 3 singles as MSHS’ Stella Dehlin pulled off a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) win over the Miners’ Stella Lenten.

“At No. 3 singles, the Stellas put on quite a show once again,” Thomsen stated. “I was extremely pleased with our Stella (Dehlin) on how she got out of her comfort zone by being a little more aggressive at times.”

Negaunee was rather dominant in the other five matches, losing a total of just 14 games in them.

As Thomsen mentioned, Marquette plays at Westwood at 3:30 p.m. today, while both of Monday’s combatants are at home Thursday, the Sentinels hosting Menominee at 3:30 p.m. and Miners entertaining ; at 4 p.m.

Both major U.P. conferences hold their league meets in about a week, the GNC being played at Kingsford next Wednesday while the Mid-Peninsula Conference goes the following day in Negaunee.
